Marva Collins a profound educator of America is quoted saying” The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another.” This is the rationale behind the inclusion of HOTS and VBQs in CBSE curriculum. Let’s probe into the necessity of including HOTS and VBQs in CBSE curriculum for our present and future generations to come.
- What are HOTS and VBQs?
Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is a far reached understanding of a concept based on critical thinking, evaluation, creativity, and innovation. Value Based Questions (VBQs) are posted to the students to make them understand how moral values are essential for analyzing real-life situations and the importance of such values in the day to day lives.
- Thinking Induced Learning along with Values imbibed
According to Francis Bacon an English Philosopher, “those who question much, shall learn much, and retain much of what is shared.” When students are posed with HOTS, their brains are triggered by questions, eagerness to interpret and evaluate the scenario creatively. Role of VBQs in a CBSE curriculum is to provide awareness to the students about a particular scenario taking up honest approach or dishonesty instead.
Isn’t this essential for a better grooming of our “Next Gen Kin” who are going to be our future leaders, doctors, engineers, teachers, artists and more?
- HOTS and VBQs remove distortion from Education
With HOTS and VBQs in the curriculum, students are made to think and analyze the facts provided to them. They are made to apply what is being learned in their day to day lives to solve the issues faced by them. They are made to distinguish between facts and fiction, synthesize the provided information and then communicate the same to solve issues to discover the truth within.
- HOTS brings in Courage where VBQs bring in Humanity
HOTS are situations which a student would not have encountered before and such scenarios do not provide any indication of start, mid or end point. For example, without HOTS a student will be able to discuss what is a water cycle and about its components. With HOTS and VBQs, the student will be able to evaluate how human greed has to lead to the depletion of our natural resources and why global warming is affecting the water cycle and its components severely.
Aren’t we creating a much better thinking force for a better world and environment around with HOTS and VBQs?
- HOTS and VBQs provides Life Skill Lessons
HOTS and VBQs provide an opportunity to the students to apply their gained knowledge in projects that work as a test for their learning abilities. This in comparison to the rote learning techniques followed like question and answers induces creative thinking and learning amongst the students. This, in turn, prepares the students with the life skills that are needed by them to face the real-life scenarios in their future professional and personal lives.
Such are the benefits of including HOTS and VBQs in the CBSE curriculum and same is being followed by Blueprint Education in their MasterMind Chapter-Wise Question Bank. This helps the students to develop their Life Skills holistically to face the world in the present and future.
